How Zeelo Is Driving Fleet Electrification For Its Clients And Operator Partners In 2023

Yet as the world moves away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy, the transportation sector itself must also make a modal shift. Electric buses and coaches are a key part of this transition, as they offer a number of advantages over traditional diesel or petrol-powered vehicles. 

To that end, Zeelo, Pelican and Zenobē have joined forces in order to provide our bus and coach operator partners and customers the opportunity to trial a Yutong TCe12 electric coach over the next few months, provided by Pelican Bus + Coach with portable charging infrastructure supplied by Zenobē. This EV roadshow will allow our operator partners to measure the performance of electric vehicles in action before they themselves choose to make any commitment to electrifying their own fleets. Each operator will trial the EV for a period of four weeks to fully test the vehicle's capabilities on existing Zeelo client services as well as explore financing options.

Zenobē’s partnership with Zeelo helps to make clean transportation an option, while addressing key obstacles that bus and coach operators may face, such as high upfront fees for electric vehicles and charging infrastructure, as well as doubts about new technology, vehicle range and business models.

This ongoing roadshow will form part of Zeelo’s Net-Zero strategy which aims to offer all clients (both employers and schools) the option to upgrade to a fully electric service, dramatically reducing the CO2 impact on their commuters and improving air quality around their campus.

Zeelo is already committed to a zero-emissions fleet in the UK and other developed markets by 2030. Currently, 1.8 million commuters are using Zeelo’s services daily in the UK, North America, and South Africa. Partnering with Climate Partner has allowed Zeelo to reduce its carbon footprint even further; for each trip, 3.5 kg of CO2 emissions are offset via programs like tree planting in Uganda or wind farm construction in Bulgaria—totalling 12,500 tonnes annually. This pioneering approach has made Zeelo the only bus transportation service across Europe that is already entirely carbon-neutral. But offsetting emissions alone is simply not enough!

The valuable opportunities afforded to us through our partnerships with Pelican and Zenobē will not only enable us to trial electric fleet infrastructure for operator partners who would otherwise have avoided such a transition, but also allow us to service more net-zero journeys for our clients and passengers than ever before. 

We are well on the way to fulfilling our commitment of 8 million journeys on electric buses by 2030.
